Erice

Erice is one of the oldest cities in Sicily. High on Mount Giuliano the place has a fantastic view (in clear weather) over almost the entire province. The most ancient walls are the remains of the Aphrodite Tempel. For centuries the place had been world famous for its temple prostitution.
The present town was built during the Middle Ages and still is very enchanting with its many winding alleyways - It of course also attracts many tourists.

City above (in) the clouds

One of the first to visit Erice was Hercules. He came, however, to kill the despot Erix in a fistfight, and then left for his next labour. Today visitors are a little more friendly minded.

On hot summer days, every trapanesi fleas the city to the sea - or up to Erice. Here, in 750m above the sea, you can keep cool enjoy the grat view.
Very often, however, the city is in clouds, then you'll feel almost like in the fog of England. The many tourists, pouring out of the buses don't bother: instead of the panoramic view they enjoy the enchanted atmosphere of the medieval town and its churches.
