Provincia di Trapani

It is an old land. In greek mythology Heracles climbs the Mount Erice, where he kills the Despot Erix.
On the island of Levanzo more than ten thousand years ago people made beautiful drawings on the walls of a cave today known as the Grotta del Genovese.
The Greek colonists came and built the great city of Seinunte. The Phoenicians set up Mozia, a settlement on a lagoon island and Hamilcar Barca, father of Hannibal of Carthage built the first big fortifications on the peninsula of the City of Trapani.
During the first punic war on the sea between Levanzo and Trapani the famous Battle of Drepana took place. It was the only defeat of the Romans in the war against Catharge.

Sea, Salt, Wine and Olives

Trapani But Trapani is not solely one of the 'ancient provinces' of Sicily: The great, fertile Land is strewn with countless vinyards, olivetrees and wheat fields. Trapani has produced more wine than any other italian province in the last years.
Scopello and San Vito lo Capo belong to the most beautiful and poular maritime regions of the island and the marine reserve of the Egadi Islands is the biggest in the Mediterranean.

If you like hiking we strongly reccomend the Zingaro National Park, and the Natural Reserve at Monte Cofano.
